The recent news on the future of Roe vs Wade was devastating, but not surprising. If you’ve been following politics and the GOP’s strategies to win and hold local power like we have, you’ve known for some time that the end of Roe was an outcome long in the making.
At Incite, we find ourselves feeling a combination of healthy frustration and hunger for action. There’s something for each of us to do about this setback, to make sure we can better guarantee healthcare and reproductive rights access for more women and families. Actions you can take to overcome this challenge include:
- Fund and donate your time to civic organizations that work to support new political leaders and build enduring political power such as Arena, Fair Fight, and Vote.org. We need a full court press to win power at local to federal levels, year after year, to win back reproductive rights.
- Normalize reproductive care access as fundamental health care. If you lead a team, consider adding family planning, IVF, fertility benefits, and paid family leave to your employee benefit plans. Startups and organizations like PL+US, Progyny, Kindbody, and Future Family can help.
- Make the connection between your diversity and inclusion goals and standing on the right side of history. If you’re choosing between saying nothing or saying something, choose the latter. Communicate a clear position on the Roe vs Wade rollback. It matters to your team, to future hires, and to the broader community you’re part of.
And remember, this is a marathon – not a track race. Dismantling this basic freedom is something that an organized, powerful few have been working behind the scenes for decades to achieve. There’s little to gain by thinking short term. To counter this setback will require decisive action, and it will take sustained effort year after year until we get to committed, guaranteed reproductive freedom and self-determination for women everywhere in America.
Let’s get to work. We’re in it with you.
