“Always be fundraising.” We hear Incite and Mill’s Co-founder, Matt Rogers, say this over and over again to founders in our portfolio who reach out for fundraising advice. But how can founders translate this into action? It depends – because fundraising can look drastically different depending on a company’s stage, needs, and the capital environment. To help those of you navigating these choppy capital waters, we&#8217;re sharing some of the best insight and advice from builders in our portfolio who have strong fundraising track records across venture, non-dilutive grants, and debt capital.

Dulcie shared her experiences so far raising seed capital for an early-stage, technically challenging project.
As a hard tech founder raising seed capital, what are the most important actions you’re taking to set yourself up for a successful fundraise? 
<ul>
<li>Leveraging our Network. We’re continuously iterating and fine-tuning Dig’s pitch to resonate with different audiences, both technical and commercial, through feedback from strategic advisors, subject matter experts, investors, and ecosystem partners.</li>
<li>Sharing our Why. We try to layer our “why”authentically into everything we do. At the earliest stage, investors are largely betting on market, tech potential, and most of all, TEAM. They want to know why we are uniquely positioned to solve this problem and that we’re committed to the journey.</li>
<li>Knowing our Objectives. Knowing our Numbers. We’re making sure to be super mindful of our cash outlay to achieve necessary milestones as we kick off the fundraising process. Having a deep understanding of our financials demonstrates to investors we will be a good steward of their capital.</li>
<li>Demonstrating Progress. The greater the technical validation we can show, even if it&#8217;s lab/shop level, the more enthusiastic we have found investors to be. Given diligence processes can take months, we are showcasing our progress to date and commercialization roadmap in early conversations, and then following up with how we’re executing on it.</li>
<li>Doing our Homework. Time is one of our most valuable assets. We continuously gather intel from any current investors, founder friends, and other resources like Pitchbook, on which funds are actively investing, who is leading, who is following, and who is waiting, so that we’re getting in front of the right investors.</li>

Wright is decarbonizing airplanes and ships with the world&#8217;s most power-dense motors, generators, and batteries. Jeff’s venture is a long-term, complex undertaking and he’s unlocked a variety of different types of capital including lots of non-dilutive government and research funds to advance Wright’s important mission. 
How can founders be creative with identifying other sources of funding (grants, project finance, etc…) and how do you suggest they approach these non-traditional opportunities?
<ul>
<li>Don’t Take No as an Answer. If it’s the right grant opportunity, recognize that sometimes one needs to apply for a program multiple times or apply to multiple programs, before securing funding. Everything takes longer than expected.</li>
</ul>
When capital is tough to come by, what are some strategic moves founders can make to stretch out their runway and make the most of their capital?
<ul>
<li>Have a Singular Focus. Spend slowly, so you don&#8217;t run out of money during a downturn. There&#8217;s the story about the monkey and the pedestal &#8211; reduce the aperture of your goal to what you can accomplish, and then execute above and beyond. Start by proving out the hardest part, and ignore everything else, and then move onto the other challenges.</li>

Mill is building a smart kitchen bin to keep food waste in the food system. Between Nest and Mill, Matt has raised over $1B in capital from a variety of sources to launch consumer products and build businesses at scale. Pat was previously a Managing Director in the Consumer Group at UBS and has advised on over $50B of M&amp;A and capital markets transactions.
What should founders do differently to set themselves up for success during late stage rounds? What advice would you give founders who are considering venture debt as part of their fundraising strategy?
<ul>
<li>Always be Fundraising. The best time to raise capital is when you don’t need it. Assume any capital raising process is going to take at least 6 months from start to completion, so try to bring in your next round investors in a previous round in a small way. Obviously, you can’t always do things that way. But when you’re able to, it makes the ramp up so much faster if they’re already bought in, they believe in the mission, and they’re getting updates along the way. Then, when it’s the right time for their fund stage to come in in a big way, you’re now ready as a company to meet them where they are.</li>
<li>Upfront Preparation is Critical. Before you start speaking with investors, make sure that you have information ready to go as soon as they are engaged. Develop a crisp teaser and investment highlights email for outreach, a comprehensive management presentation, and an excel model with detailed assumptions. One of the biggest mistakes companies make is starting to have investor dialogue before they’re prepared which causes them to be reactive. This will slow down a process and give a negative initial impression that you don’t have things in order.</li>
<li>Venture Debt for Runway Extension. If you’re going to raise venture debt you should start immediately after you close an equity round, as lenders’ committees will need to see 15-18 months of runway without their capital. When choosing a lender it is important to find someone that you feel understands your business and will be a good partner to you &#8211; especially if times get difficult. Make sure that your plan is solid and achievable, as venture debt will almost certainly come with milestone-based draws.</li>
</ul>

Remember that investors are more than just backers; they’re people. By sharing your mission, communicating authentically, and building genuine connections, you’ll find the right partners for the long-haul. Because in the unpredictable journey of company-building, having the right crew in your corner can make all the difference.

Incite Post | Fundraising: Preparing Beyond the Pitch

There is a lot of talk in startups about how to go from zero to one. And there’s no doubt getting an idea off the ground is challenging – in fact, that’s why we do what we do. But when it comes to innovative technologies tackling climate change, we’ve largely mastered the zero to one challenge – many of the solutions exist. We’ve proven that we can suck carbon dioxide out of the air or that we can decarbonize industrial processes in pilots. Now, the challenge turns to scaling in a meaningful way. The question becomes: What catalyzes exponential growth for climate technologies that sit within complex environmental, economic, and social systems? What does one to ten thousand look like?
First, Positive Feedback Loops. We spoke with our expert friend, Kate Gordon, former Senior Advisor to the Secretary of Energy, who shared this, “The only way we have sustained action towards climate is if people feel like they’re part of it.” Some might view incorporating community voices into climate projects as a roadblock. But what if communities were the superpower accelerator we need for exponential growth? With the latest <a href="https://www.energy.gov/infrastructure/about-community-benefits-plans" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Community Benefits Plans</a> required of any private projects funded by Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), and now the Loans Program Office, we are already seeing this in action. Municipalities are entering into negotiated enforceable agreements resulting in economic benefits at the local level and some are even getting equity in these climate projects. When one community sees the economic benefits another is experiencing from a new battery manufacturing plant or a direct air capture hub, others will want in. Instead of pushing these developments on communities, what if they began pulling for them? That’s a chance for virality.
Second, Politically Engaged Citizens. For exponential climate progress, we cannot afford to take steps backwards by revising the historic legislation that this administration has brought. The nearly $1 trillion of incentives from the IRA and BIL has set us up for success, but the implementation of tax credits and subsidies for critical clean energy infrastructure and decarbonization technologies are just beginning. While the IRA is likely too big to be rolled back entirely, a change of federal leadership would drastically constrain the growth we need to see before 2030. So, if you care about climate, it’s imperative you get to know your candidates and show up for elections, especially this year. And being an engaged citizen isn’t just about the presidential race. In fact, 75% of the United States’ climate commitments under the Paris Agreement can be realized through state and local governments. Over 200,000 people will run for office in 2024 – many in climate-critical races – and you can make a difference up and down the ballot.

2023 was choppy waters for people who were building. Sure, a handful of companies rode the AI investment boom, but if you were building outside of this category, boy, was it tough. High interest rates, a pullback of private capital, and a global landscape fraught with instability reminded us that entrepreneurship is about the grit and the grind, not just the glory.
But smooth seas never made skilled sailors, and many builders across the Incite community navigated these challenges with poise, creativity, and still got sh*t done. In fact, landmark, transformative progress was made across a variety of key industries. Here were some silver linings that we were grateful for in 2023:
There was important momentum in the conversation and actions surrounding all greenhouse gasses, not just carbon dioxide. We saw startups launch innovative technologies, nonprofits mobilize people and resources, and even regulators set guidelines in unprecedented ways. To start the year, <a href="http://www.mill.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-cke-saved-href="http://www.mill.com">Mill</a> launched an entirely new system to keep food waste in the food system, paving the way to reduce methane emissions from households. The EPA announced the strictest regulations yet to cut methane and other harmful air pollutants from the oil and gas industry. In 2030 alone, these reductions are expected to lead to <a href="https://www.epa.gov/newsreleases/biden-harris-administration-finalizes-standards-slash-methane-pollution-combat-climate#:~:text=EPA's%20final%20rule%20leverages%20the,the%20power%20sector%20in%202021." target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-cke-saved-href="https://www.epa.gov/newsreleases/biden-harris-administration-finalizes-standards-slash-methane-pollution-combat-climate#:~:text=EPA's%20final%20rule%20leverages%20the,the%20power%20sector%20in%202021.">reductions equivalent to 130 million metric tons of carbon dioxide</a> – more than what is emitted from 28 million gasoline cars. COP28 was arguably the most productive COP for non-carbon dioxide emissions ever, with Global Methane Pledge (GMP) members committing over <a href="https://www.wri.org/news/statement-cop28-countries-announce-new-efforts-reduce-methane-pollution" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-cke-saved-href="https://www.wri.org/news/statement-cop28-countries-announce-new-efforts-reduce-methane-pollution">$1 billion in new grant funding</a> to mobilize further methane action. That’s some serious business. And with an upcoming farm bill that will fight to protect over $20B in Inflation Reduction Act funding that goes directly to family farmers’ pockets to advance climate-friendly practices that reduce nitrous oxide, methane, and carbon emissions, there is more to be done in 2024.
It was also a huge year for direct air capture (DAC), where historic progress was made on the ground and through committed capital. Heirloom unveiled the <a href="https://www.heirloomcarbon.com/news/heirloom-unveils-americas-first-commercial-direct-air-capture-facility" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-cke-saved-href="https://www.heirloomcarbon.com/news/heirloom-unveils-americas-first-commercial-direct-air-capture-facility">first-ever commercial Direct Air Capture facility in the United States</a>. The team worked hand-in-hand with the city of Tracy and all levels of government to show these projects can move quickly to advance climate goals while also creating good, local jobs. Meanwhile, corporations and the federal government are joining the fight too. <a href="https://www.wsj.com/us-news/climate-environment/carbon-removal-credits-climate-startups-investments-4aa3ca70?st=ijofqp4h4ofq549" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-cke-saved-href="https://www.wsj.com/us-news/climate-environment/carbon-removal-credits-climate-startups-investments-4aa3ca70?st=ijofqp4h4ofq549">Private sector purchases</a> of DAC-related carbon removal credits were up nearly 500% from last year and the US Department of Energy made the <a href="https://www.energy.gov/articles/biden-harris-administration-announces-12-billion-nations-first-direct-air-capture#:~:text=Project%20Cypress%20(Calcasieu%20Parish%2C%20LA,store%20it%20permanently%20deep%20underground." target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-cke-saved-href="https://www.energy.gov/articles/biden-harris-administration-announces-12-billion-nations-first-direct-air-capture#:~:text=Project%20Cypress%20(Calcasieu%20Parish%2C%20LA,store%20it%20permanently%20deep%20underground.">world’s largest investment in history for engineered carbon removal</a>, further laying the foundation for the industry to help us reach net zero.
2023 was also a great year for technology working to improve human health. Novel diagnostic methods for cancer, chronic, and rare disease are enabling earlier detections with greater precision. More importantly, as the cost of DNA sequencing continues to nose dive, diagnostics like <a href="https://www.curvebio.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-cke-saved-href="https://www.curvebio.com/">CurveBio</a>’s blood tests and <a href="https://www.probablygenetic.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-cke-saved-href="https://www.probablygenetic.com/">Probably Genetic</a>’s no-cost at-home DNA test are making diagnosing disease more accessible. And while image-based methods like <a href="http://www.prenuvo.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-cke-saved-href="http://www.prenuvo.com">Prenuvo</a>’s MRI screens have a ways to go to bring down cost, we see innovation across all modalities as the best way to increase signal to noise, and further enable life-saving detections. Overall, combining a diverse set of diagnostics with increased access to expert opinion through telehealth and the predictive possibilities of machine learning and AI, we foresee a promising future for preventive health. Big things in store for 2024.
All that to say, 2023 wasn’t easy. Amidst the chaos in the world, we’re taking time over the holidays to be grateful for what we have, give what we can, stay connected to those we love, and keep fighting the good fight. We hope you are finding some time to recharge too. See you next year.

Incite Post | Recaps, Reflections, and Reasons for Hope

On the heels of the world’s biggest climate conference, the urgency for climate action is greater than ever. While we can’t deny the necessity of developing new industries and markets, we also see massive opportunities embedded within our current systems to significantly alter the trajectory of climate change. In fact, reengineering key industries and retooling long-standing practices may be the fastest way to create scalable, near-term change. For us that begins with US agriculture sector.
The current agricultural system was created with a single goal: mass produce food. And in pursuit of that objective we churn out more food than we can consume, with over 40% of US food now going to waste. And while the food industry is producing historic volumes and profits, a staggering <a href="https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2023/10/26/1208760054/food-insecurity-families-struggle-hunger-poverty" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-cke-saved-href="https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2023/10/26/1208760054/food-insecurity-families-struggle-hunger-poverty">17 million households are still facing food insecurity in the US</a>. The promise of abundant food access is simply not being delivered.
Increasingly, data also tells us that other important measures, like human, soil, and planetary health are suffering beneath the current approach. So where are there opportunities to revitalize our existing structures to include these elements in our definition of agricultural success? This isn’t about one company, national organization, or transformational product, it will require a focused effort to reinvent an interconnected set of long-held practices and established industries.
One place to start is reducing our farming system’s dependency on chemicals that are gradually killing our soil, humans, and the planet. There’s ~915M acres of US Farmland and <a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2019/01/10/organic-farming-is-on-the-rise-in-the-u-s/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-cke-saved-href="https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2019/01/10/organic-farming-is-on-the-rise-in-the-u-s/">only ~1% of that is organic</a>, where farmers don’t use pesticides to grow crops. The opportunity cost? Soil has the potential to sequester up to <a href="https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5b9362d89d5abb8c51d474f8/t/62292045a84bb233211775e7/1646862413364/Carbon180-SoilCarbonMoonshot.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-cke-saved-href="https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5b9362d89d5abb8c51d474f8/t/62292045a84bb233211775e7/1646862413364/Carbon180-SoilCarbonMoonshot.pdf">5 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year</a> — an amount equal to 13% of global annual greenhouse gas emissions. Yet, the practices most farmers use today strip the natural soil microbial ecosystem of its carbon sequestration ability. This is a massive climate opportunity that doesn’t require an entirely new food production value chain, but rather a shift in the farmer’s relationship with their land, the natural ecosystems that govern it, and their belief in what&#8217;s possible, both economically and environmentally.
By combining regenerative practices, farmer-centric incentives and policies, and technologies that simplify the system we can promote chemical-free farming, benefiting both people and the environment. Not to mention sustainable technologies are pivotal in re-centering the farmer, empowering them to capture greater value from their land while adopting more sustainable practices.

We’ve said this before… our food system is one of the biggest opportunities to impact change for both people and the planet.
Why? If food waste were a country, it&#8217;d be the world&#8217;s third-largest greenhouse gas emitter, just behind China and the US. That’s why our co-founder, Matt Rogers, launched <a href="http://www.mill.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mill</a> in 2020 to transform the way food is recycled and repurposed in the home. But when it comes to food, we aren’t stopping at individual homes; we want to revamp the entire food system, positioning it for generations of success. That means not only bringing quality, nutritious food to our youth today, but also helping them understand where it came from, where it will go, and the impact it will have on our planet. To achieve this, we are diving deep on one of America’s largest food systems – school cafeterias.
Across the US, over 30 million meals are served each day through the National School Lunch Program. That’s a lot of kids receiving food that is often low-quality, highly-processed, and frankly, not that tasty. The result? Children don’t receive the nutrition they need, and food ends up in the garbage can, making lunchtime a huge opportunity to turn the system on its head.
But we also know this is work we can’t do ourselves. To impact the K-12 food system in a meaningful way, a multi-faceted ecosystem is needed, and so this year we’ve decided to help fund three incredible nonprofits: <a href="https://www.chefannfoundation.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chef Ann</a>, <a href="https://eatreal.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Eat Real</a>, and <a href="https://www.worldwildlife.org/stories/food-waste-warriors" target="_blank" rel="noopener">W</a><a href="https://www.worldwildlife.org/stories/food-waste-warriors" target="_blank" rel="noopener">WF</a> who are each tackling the cafeteria problem from a different angle. We’ve asked their founders to share some thoughts on how their organization will impact change:

The <a href="https://www.chefannfoundation.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chef Ann Foundation</a> is dedicated to promoting whole-ingredient, scratch-cooking in schools, starting with the chefs behind the food – training lunch staff to integrate sustainability into their meal preparation through programmatic efforts. Mara Fleishman is the Chief Executive Officer of the Chef Ann Foundation.

<a href="https://eatreal.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Eat REAL</a> has developed a free certification program that helps schools bring healthier, locally sourced food to the lunch line. Nora LaTorre is the Chief Executive Officer of Eat REAL.

The <a href="https://www.worldwildlife.org/stories/food-waste-warriors" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Food Waste Warriors</a> program at the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) supercharges the advancement of critical food waste tactics and policies in schools by leveraging its influential position at the state and federal level. Pete Pearson is the Global Initiative Lead of Food Circularity at WWF.

Our funding to these organizations will help them rapidly accelerate the development of their food waste reduction efforts and position our youth to be more environmentally conscious for generations to come. Incite Post | The Cafeteria Food Fight

Let’s talk about the farm bill, one of the most important pieces of recurring U.S. legislation you may have never heard of. Here’s how it works: every ~ 5 years, Congress passes a bill that governs everything from crop insurance for farmers to food benefits for low income families to climate policy. This one piece of omnibus (i.e., contains a lot of provisions) legislation impacts our farmers, our food, our welfare, and our climate. Seems like it should be front page news, no?
The <a href="https://www.ers.usda.gov/agriculture-improvement-act-of-2018-highlights-and-implications/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-cke-saved-href="https://www.ers.usda.gov/agriculture-improvement-act-of-2018-highlights-and-implications/">2018 farm bill</a> expired on September 30th and the new one, of course, is entrenched in controversy with surprisingly little media coverage. We won&#8217;t focus too much on the main controversy &#8211; which is largely driven by one party that wants to <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/us/democrats-urge-us-house-republicans-not-cut-food-aid-poor-2023-08-07/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-cke-saved-href="https://www.reuters.com/world/us/democrats-urge-us-house-republicans-not-cut-food-aid-poor-2023-08-07/">cut welfare benefits</a> for our most vulnerable and <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/06/06/gop-may-target-climate-law-again-this-time-farm-bill/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-cke-saved-href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/06/06/gop-may-target-climate-law-again-this-time-farm-bill/">refuses to support legislation</a> that supports our climate &#8211; other than to say: everyone has a right to food and we need to do everything we can to stop a climate catastrophe.
Instead, we’re focusing this edition of the Incite Post on some of the new ideas in this year’s farm bill debate. Take for example some of Congressman Blumenauer’s <a href="https://www.wbur.org/onpoint/2023/09/07/is-it-time-to-rethink-how-the-farm-bill-works" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-cke-saved-href="https://www.wbur.org/onpoint/2023/09/07/is-it-time-to-rethink-how-the-farm-bill-works">points</a>: because of how it structures subsidies, the farm bill is incentivizing farmers to grow only certain crops, which impacts our nutrition, economy, and climate. And 10% of the biggest farmers get 70% of the benefits of those subsidies.
What would it look like to completely reimagine the farm bill to prioritize regular farmers, the American people, and our climate?
To approach an answer to that question, we have to start by understanding exactly what the problem is, and the potential impact of proposed solutions. We’ve written about <a href="https://www.incite.org/post/dont-forget-about-methane/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-cke-saved-href="https://www.incite.org/post/dont-forget-about-methane/">methane emissions</a>, which are responsible for 30% of our planet’s warming to date, and how we need to make progress on both measurement &amp; regulation. And the farm bill has an opportunity to address another, similarly understudied issue: soil carbon. Did you know that healthy soils could sequester up to 13% of global greenhouse gas emissions?

The <a href="https://carbon180.medium.com/a-new-soil-carbon-bill-breaks-ground-64582cb1853a" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-cke-saved-href="https://carbon180.medium.com/a-new-soil-carbon-bill-breaks-ground-64582cb1853a">Advancing Research on Agricultural Climate Impacts Act (ARACIA)</a> directs the USDA to develop measurement and best practice tools to measure soil carbon sequestration, with the eventual goal of building an incentive structure that rewards farmers for helping the climate. That seems like a great start, and to learn more, we sat down with Londyn Marshall, Carbon180’s Deputy Director for Government Affairs. Check out our interview below.

A year ago, the Inflation Reduction Act was signed into law, marking a historic effort to spur our clean energy transition. A year later, we’re asking: is the IRA working? Are companies investing in clean energy projects at scale? Do consumers understand how to leverage IRA tax benefits available for home electrification?
If we want those answers to be yes, we have some ideas. It starts with creating a best-in-class user experience and product. What motivated you to join this incredibly exciting, novel world of home electrification? What surprised you most while diving into this space? 
Julia: I’ve always been deeply interested in issues of security. My parents came from very different worlds (Lebanon and Kansas!) but they had each faced their own moments of extreme insecurity. They taught us that safety isn&#8217;t ever guaranteed &#8212; whether personal or national, these topics were part of dinner table conversation. That led me to study security technology at Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service, and ultimately spend ten years in the cybersecurity industry.
Every Bay Area resident will remember that surreal day in 2020 when our skies turned an apocalyptic orange while fires devastated wine country. It hit home that day that climate change was the critical security threat facing my generation – and I wanted to do my part. Like with cyber 10-15 years ago, awareness of the climate threat is no longer an issue; homeowners are motivated to electrify to contribute to the green transition, we just need to make it easy for them. That’s our mission.
Rick: When Julia reached out to me last fall, I’d recently left my role as the state of California’s Chief Technology Innovation Officer, where I led the team that today is known as the Office of Digital Services. It was inspiring to see first-hand how effective collaboration between the public and private sectors could be – in our work on the state’s <a href="https://techblog.cdt.ca.gov/2022/01/californians-have-downloaded-over-11-million-digital-vaccine-records/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-cke-saved-href="https://techblog.cdt.ca.gov/2022/01/californians-have-downloaded-over-11-million-digital-vaccine-records/">COVID-19 response</a>, my team collaborated with health care providers, pharmacies, state governments, and tech teams from foreign countries. As Julia filled me in on the exciting developments with the recently passed Inflation Reduction Act, I realized a similar all-hands-on-deck collaboration would be needed. Pretty quickly, we both realized that there was a need for a consumer-facing company to attack this problem to ensure that the policy goals could be attained.
Why has it been so difficult for homeowners to update and electrify their appliances in the past? What makes this the right moment and how is Onsemble solving the toughest challenges related to the transition? 
Rick: Early in our exploration, I tried to figure out what incentives existed to replace my home’s appliances. One of the California state rebate sites told me there were some incentives I’d get, others my contractor would get – but I’d need to fill out some forms, and then have my contractor fill out some other forms, and qualify for their partner program. Towards the bottom of the page, I noticed a mention that PG&amp;E had some incentives as well – so I went to PG&amp;E’s website where I was told that indeed there were additional dollars available, and that I should go to this other website for details. Which is how I got back to where I started! I was in a loop, with no obvious way to apply for, let alone receive, the incentive dollars. It was paralyzing.
Julia: Up until a few years ago, you couldn’t really guarantee that electric appliances were up to the job – in all climates, in all locations. But the advances in heat pumps – for both water heating and home heating and cooling – have been enormous over the last several years. The tech exists, and we know it works. But without an easy way to apply the substantial incentives towards the cost of upgrading – most consumers will do the logical thing and wait until their appliances break before they think about replacing them. From a climate point of view, we can’t afford to wait that long – we need to decarbonize these homes now. Onsemble makes it possible for a homeowner to make the cost-effective decision that also happens to be the planet-friendly decision. It’s a win-win.
What does storytelling look like for your team? How do you convey both the climate and quality of life benefits in a way that&#8217;s appealing to consumers? 
Julia: Storytelling for us always starts with listening to real people – we’ve had hundreds of conversations with homeowners, contractors, and other partners. Early in one of our user research sessions, we asked a recent first-time homeowner about how climate realities impact her lifestyle choices. She was in her 30s, had recently had her first child, and she and her partner were doing many of the right things: they’d recently replaced their car with an EV, and were looking into solar panels on the home they’d just bought. When we told them that their furnace and water heater were actually burning fossil fuels to function and in fact are a large driver of  their family’s carbon footprint, she was shocked.
Is the IRA enough? What additional state &amp; federal legislation would you like to see to accelerate home electrification moving forward?
Rick: When I worked at Google, I heard Eric Schmidt talk about a number of things as being “necessary, but not sufficient”. That’s how I think about the IRA: it will be a necessary part of solving the climate crisis, but by itself it won’t be sufficient. One area that I’d love to see progress on is federal loan support similar to what the feds did with mortgages. Saul Griffith first <a href="https://medium.com/otherlab-news/solving-climate-change-with-a-loan-d1aac4b8259a" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-cke-saved-href="https://medium.com/otherlab-news/solving-climate-change-with-a-loan-d1aac4b8259a">wrote about this back in 2020</a>, and later expanded on it in his book Electrify. Incentives like what the IRA provides will help lower the cost of decarbonization, but won’t eliminate it. And the remaining cost could still be significant – money that the average homeowner may not be able to easily afford. Getting creative with additional approaches to lowering the cost of capital necessary to decarbonize would be an important bookend to the necessary (but not sufficient!) incentives we’ll start seeing next year when the IRA hits the market.
Julia: Yes, lowering the costs for the homeowner is critical, and we’re excited about the momentum that the IRA dollars will initiate in the market. But we need to be intentional about where those dollars go. In California I’ve been excited by the increased focus on equity when it comes to home electrification and decarbonization. For example, the <a href="https://www.energy.ca.gov/programs-and-topics/programs/equitable-building-decarbonization-program" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-cke-saved-href="https://www.energy.ca.gov/programs-and-topics/programs/equitable-building-decarbonization-program">California Energy Commission’s Equitable Building Decarbonization Program</a> (authorized by Assembly Bill 209), which is looking to zero out project costs in communities with low- and moderate- income households, is an example of how states can build on the momentum from the federal funding. We’re optimistic that other states will follow suit with similar initiatives. And wherever they do, the Onsemble platform will be there to help homeowners take full advantage.
What’s next for Onsemble? How can our readers stay up to date? 
Right now the team is laser-focused on delivering the first version of our mobile app to homeowners in our three launch markets: Sonoma, Marin, and Contra Costa counties in the Bay Area. We’ll expand quickly after that across the U.S. in anticipation of state-level IRA incentive rollout. Longer-term, we will launch in every market where incentives exist to help homeowners upgrade and electrify their homes. The historic <a href="https://www.heirloomcarbon.com/news/notification-of-selection-on-direct-air-capture-hub" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-cke-saved-href="https://www.heirloomcarbon.com/news/notification-of-selection-on-direct-air-capture-hub">$1.2B DOE investment last week</a> to build Regional Direct Air Capture Hub Programs across the US got us thinking, how do we make the same meaningful progress across funding, innovation and policy for methane mitigation and removal?
As if we needed another reminder, last week’s devastating Maui wildfires provide it; the climate is shifting, and we don’t have time. Carbon removal technologies take time to engineer, develop and rapidly scale. There are multiple greenhouse gasses that are contributing to our current climate woes &#8211; carbon, methane, and nitrous oxide. We can’t rely on CO2 mitigation alone. So, we better get moving on more than one greenhouse gas at a time.
Methane is responsible for 30% of our current warming and deep reductions are critical to keeping global climate goals within reach and <a href="https://theconversation.com/rising-methane-could-be-a-sign-that-earths-climate-is-part-way-through-a-termination-level-transition-211211" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-cke-saved-href="https://theconversation.com/rising-methane-could-be-a-sign-that-earths-climate-is-part-way-through-a-termination-level-transition-211211">avoiding near-term climate impacts</a>. The good news is there are many practical solutions that could mitigate methane: plugging leaks in oil &amp; gas industries, food waste prevention, organic waste diversion and anaerobic digesters. To implement these solutions, we need to accelerate private and public funding to spur innovation and build coalitions. Which is why we’re writing to you.
The <a href="https://ww2.arb.ca.gov/public-comments/public-comments-first-public-workshop-californias-approach-under-us-epas-climate" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-cke-saved-href="https://ww2.arb.ca.gov/public-comments/public-comments-first-public-workshop-californias-approach-under-us-epas-climate">California Air Resources Board (CARB)</a> has invited the public to submit comments to inform California’s approach and maximize emission reduction plans as part of the <a href="https://www.epa.gov/inflation-reduction-act/climate-pollution-reduction-grants#CPRG-KeyDates" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-cke-saved-href="https://www.epa.gov/inflation-reduction-act/climate-pollution-reduction-grants#CPRG-KeyDates">Climate Pollution Reduction Grant (CPRG) program</a>, a $5 billion EPA program funded by the Inflation Reduction Act.
They need to hear from all of us, and this is also a huge opportunity for municipalities to address food loss and waste (FLW), one of the most impactful near-term actions to address methane and incorporate critical climate measures in upcoming action plans.
Methane and food waste have been on the back-burner for too long, and the open CARB comments are an opportunity for us to change that. If you are a California resident, this is your chance to be an advocate in one of California’s most important spending decisions.

Incite Post | A Quick Call to Action

Here’s something that keeps us up at night: <a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2023/04/18/for-earth-day-key-facts-about-americans-views-of-climate-change-and-renewable-energy/">only about half of U.S. adults</a> view climate change as a serious issue. So how do we reach the remaining 50%? 
We’re dealing with a set of deeply embedded issues here. In the climate space, we often spend far too much time optimizing for the half that already believe, when the highest impact could be in bringing the other 50% into the conversation. And for those of us who are already bought into the existential risk of climate change, climate doomism &#8211; a sense of hopelessness and helplessness &#8211; can be demotivating. And then there’s purposeful exclusion. How many marginalized voices have been shut out of the climate conversation? 
We need better storytelling in climate. Media &#8211; in all forms &#8211; plays a unique and valuable role to inform, inspire, and in some cases, move people to take action. When it comes to climate, simply sharing the ‘what’ of climate change (e.g., the statistics) has not been enough. Perhaps it&#8217;s time to start sharing the ‘how’ (e.g., how climate change is already impacting us) and ‘who’ (e.g., the stories of the people impacted and the innovators leading the charge). We need to rethink our media strategies to re-engage and empower a new generation of diverse storytellers, journalists, and activists to challenge the status quo of climate communication. We don’t have clear answers yet, but it’s time to start supporting communication experiments that engage new people in new ways. 
The good thing is there are plenty of organizations making progress in this space &#8211; testing out new forms of communication on new platforms and with new voices to spark action. Take <a href="https://www.greenpeace.org/aotearoa/press-release/dont-stop-greenpeace-collaborates-on-star-studded-cover-of-fleetwood-macs-iconic-song/">Greenpeace’s recent short film</a> and cover of Fleetwood Mac’s iconic song “Don’t Stop”- a metaphor for corporations partying like there’s no tomorrow as they reach record profits on behalf of the unraveling climate crisis- call to action to create a better tomorrow. Or <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3N2q4aw3XM">Pique Action’s short video</a> on how Liminal insights improves battery quality and waste and the innovative founders guiding us to change.  
And sometimes the best climate storytelling doesn&#8217;t lead with climate at all &#8211; our friends at <a href="https://www.mill.com/">Mill</a> are tackling the existential problem of food waste (it’s 10% of our emissions!), but their value proposition to consumers isn’t saving the climate, it’s improving quality life: the Mill bin keeps stinky trash out of your kitchen.
We’ve got countless examples of folks doing this work &#8211; envisioning new forms of storytelling and creating new spaces for change. For this edition of the Incite Post, we sat down with a few of our Partners who are building out a vision for climate storytelling and inclusion.

We hear a lot of climate doomism, but from our perch we’re feeling optimistic. Methane is on our mind &#8211; we’re often asked about topic areas that we’re diving into &#8211; and amidst historic rates of methane emissions, this is one of them.
Why has such a potent gas remained on the periphery of climate agendas? While CO2 is the most prevalent greenhouse gas, methane has more than <a href="https://www.epa.gov/gmi/importance-methane#:~:text=Methane%20is%20more%20than%2025,due%20to%20human%2Drelated%20activities." target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-cke-saved-href="https://www.epa.gov/gmi/importance-methane#:~:text=Methane%20is%20more%20than%2025,due%20to%20human%2Drelated%20activities.">80 times the warming potential</a> of CO2 during the first 20 years it reaches the atmosphere and has contributed to 30% of the planet’s warming to date. With 60% of methane emission sources from human-led activity alone (landfills leak it, cows burp it, and natural gas burns it), it’s time to pay more attention to methane’s impact.
Addressing methane emissions is crucial to meeting our climate goals, and we have a ton of work to do to catch up with CO2. If deployable solutions exist in certain industry sectors, what’s staling implementation? How do we make real progress on methane mitigation as 2030 climate targets loom on the horizon?
We’ve seen a rapid rise in innovative solutions to identify, monitor and mitigate methane emissions across multiple industries, from <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/jan/24/bill-gates-startup-cow-burps-methane-emissions" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-cke-saved-href="https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/jan/24/bill-gates-startup-cow-burps-methane-emissions">livestock feed supplements</a> to <a href="https://www.epa.gov/agstar/how-does-anaerobic-digestion-work#:~:text=Anaerobic%20digestion%20is%20a%20process,in%20the%20absence%20of%20oxygen." target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-cke-saved-href="https://www.epa.gov/agstar/how-does-anaerobic-digestion-work#:~:text=Anaerobic%20digestion%20is%20a%20process,in%20the%20absence%20of%20oxygen.">anaerobic digesters</a> in waste systems to <a href="https://www.methanesat.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-cke-saved-href="https://www.methanesat.org/">satellite sensors to accurately detect methane leaks</a> in oil and gas production. And it’s not like methane has gone unnoticed at a national level. In a historic <a href="https://www.globalmethanepledge.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-cke-saved-href="https://www.globalmethanepledge.org/">Global Methane Pledge</a>, over 150 countries pledged to slash methane emissions by at least 30% from 2020 levels by 2030 and President Biden released a <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/US-Methane-Emissions-Reduction-Action-Plan-1.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-cke-saved-href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/US-Methane-Emissions-Reduction-Action-Plan-1.pdf">U.S. Methane Emission Plan</a> to address each methane source. There’s still room to grow, though &#8211; climate pledges aren’t enough to drive widespread adoption. The private and public sector can play a critical role in holding industry accountable while simultaneously incentivizing the research development and deployment of new technology.
Take the energy sector-strict methane regulations to manage leaks and limit flaring fall short in the absence of state field enforcement. It would take less than <a href="https://grist.org/energy/big-oil-record-2022-profits-methane-emissions-iea/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-cke-saved-href="https://grist.org/energy/big-oil-record-2022-profits-methane-emissions-iea/">3% of big oil’s profits</a> to deploy readily available solutions, yet as we’re seeing with <a href="https://insideclimatenews.org/news/12032023/new-mexico-methane-gas-flaring/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-cke-saved-href="https://insideclimatenews.org/news/12032023/new-mexico-methane-gas-flaring/">oil and gas operators in New Mexico</a>, there’s no incentive for operators to do anything about it.
We’re thrilled to see the Biden Admin proposed strict regulations to manage methane leaks and limit flaring and beginning in 2024, oil and gas entities will be charged a<a href="https://blogs.law.columbia.edu/climatechange/2022/08/23/the-new-methane-emissions-charge-one-limited-but-important-stick-in-the-inflation-reduction-act/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-cke-saved-href="https://blogs.law.columbia.edu/climatechange/2022/08/23/the-new-methane-emissions-charge-one-limited-but-important-stick-in-the-inflation-reduction-act/"> $900/metric ton methane emission charge</a> as part of the IRA, a first-of-its-kind emission fee. However, enforcement falls short as these regulations rely heavily not only on industry to self-regulate, but also on state and local governments. As regulators develop methane mitigation policies across critical industry sectors (agriculture, oil and gas, waste), how can philanthropists, policymakers and company leaders work together to enable adoption?

Incite Post | A Lot of Jobs, and a Lot of Prize Money

Electrification regulations are heating up – we’ve seen New York recently <a href="https://www.vox.com/climate/2023/5/4/23711062/new-york-gas-stove-furnace-ban-new-buildings">ban gas hookups</a> in most new building construction by 2026 and California <a href="https://grist.org/transportation/electrify-everything-california-regulations-trucks-trains/">ban the sale of diesel</a> trucks by 2036. Compared to where we started, these are huge victories – but as those dates show, we are years out from enforcement, and even further from systematic change that regulates not just new, but existing non-electric cars, stoves and other devices.
What’s on our mind these days is near-term scale: in the absence of universal, aggressive regulation, what does it look like to make these technologies mainstream, as quickly as possible? How do we electrify millions of gas powered cars, industries and home appliances, taking into account diverse infrastructure requirements, logistics and costs? If the technology and funding exist, why does it still seem so out of reach for so many Americans and businesses? 
An alarming number of studies <a href="https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-health-risks-of-gas-stoves-explained/">show</a> the harmful health implications of gas stoves and we know that in nearly every case, consumer-electrical upgrades are <a href="https://www.mcjcollective.com/my-climate-journey-podcast/leah-stokes#:~:text=Well%2C%20that%27s%20bullshit,even%20like%20cars.">better than their alternatives</a>. With the Inflation Reduction Act’s <a href="https://assets.ctfassets.net/v4qx5q5o44nj/7LiHS6hhVKaIdph8bdVV8b/aec9fc3a35985027af3f97111304db7a/factsheet_Electrification_Rebates.pdf">electrification rebates</a> and innovative consumer product improvements coming to market, the cost and performance of electric-upgrades is competitive with gas alternatives. Yet &#8211; only 44% of Americans <a href="https://pro.morningconsult.com/instant-intel/natural-gas-bans-energy-efficiency">currently support</a> banning gas lines in new construction, and 41% of Americans <a href="https://news.gallup.com/poll/474095/americans-not-completely-sold-electric-vehicles.aspx">say they will never buy</a> an electric vehicle. Plus there&#8217;s the argument that this unlocks opportunities for American innovation and companies.
You could argue that electrification will be a <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/jan/20/super-tipping-points-climate-electric-cars-meat-emissions">tipping-point phenomenon</a> &#8211; one day we’ll cross a threshold in public opinion that leads to rapid scale. In either case, our job is simple: drive both the institutional and societal change necessary to speed up the pace of electrification. That is more than just an incentives task &#8211; it requires consistent climate education, pushing back on fossil fuel <a href="https://www.motherjones.com/environment/2021/06/how-the-fossil-fuel-industry-convinced-americans-to-love-gas-stoves/">propaganda</a>, and supporting innovative technical development. 
Perhaps that means leading not with climate, but rather with the performance, long-term cost, or convenience improvements that come with electrification. And while local, state, and federal electrification incentives are fantastic, navigating them can be tedious and complex &#8211; how do we design systems that do the heavy lifting for consumers, breaking down their available rebates, filling out the forms, and finding them certified installers?

Incite Post | Scaling Electrification

When I started at Incite over 5 years ago, my head was spinning trying to understand the breadth and depth of what Matt and Swati had set out to do with Incite. I was brought on to help build systems and support an emerging class of founders working within private companies, nonprofits and on political campaigns to effectively make the world a better place. 
I had built my own small business, worked within venture capital and had experience in-house at a rapidly scaling health technology company, but had never worked at the nexus of investments, philanthropy and political giving. As a self-proclaimed jane of all trades, I was confident I would be able to wrap my head around the concepts, build a system to keep us organized operationally, and establish rapport with leaders and founders working on such important issues as climate change, health equity and economic opportunity. 
But there was so much I didn’t know. Looking back, it was crippling at times. And just when I thought I had seen and done it all, came even bigger challenges that rocked our world (i.e. a global pandemic or a banking collapse and bailout, just to name a few).  
Fast forward, it’s been 5 years. That’s sort of a lifetime in the Bay Area and certainly within tech. There’s a lot I didn’t know when I started, that I do know now. Unfortunately, there’s no magic checklist here – I’m still learning each and every day – but there are a few things I’ve gathered in these 5 years that feel universally applicable. In the spirit of self-reflection, I wanted to share the 5 Things I’ve Learned that have made me a better investor, funder, mentor, spouse and parent. 
Above all, though, what matters more than being a really good investor or founder, is being a good human, full stop.

And because 5 lessons didn’t seem like nearly enough for 1,825 days of learning, here are 5 more quick hits I would classify as “honorable mentions”:

<li>Telling someone “no” never gets easier &#8211; you just do it more often. </li>
<li>Pay it forward, often and without expectations. </li>
<li>Pay attention to your audience. </li>

Incite Post | April 16th, 2023: The New Incite.org

While we&#8217;re distracted by discussions of artificial general intelligence, we&#8217;re ignoring some of the fundamental technology &amp; society questions of our time.

First, an introduction. I’m Prathm Juneja, and apart from being a part-time member of Team Incite, I’m also a PhD Candidate in Social Data Science at Oxford, focused on the intersection of technology, politics, and government in the United States. I spend a lot of time thinking about AI ethics and U.S. technology policy &#8211; as many more people are these days!
For this edition of the Post, I thought I’d share some reflections on these action-packed recent weeks, and the important questions they raise. 
Let’s start with the overarching one: when does technology become a ‘public good’ that warrants more engagement, earlier, from civic stakeholders? 
In the last few weeks, we’ve seen the release of Microsoft’s <a href="https://www.bing.com/new">Bing</a> and <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2023/3/16/23642833/microsoft-365-ai-copilot-word-outlook-teams">Office 365 </a>Chats, Open AI’s <a href="https://openai.com/research/gpt-4">GPT 4</a>, <a href="https://openai.com/blog/chatgpt-plugins">plugins</a>, and <a href="https://github.blog/2023-03-22-github-copilot-x-the-ai-powered-developer-experience/">Co-Pilot X</a>, Google’s <a href="https://bard.google.com/">BARD</a>, Midjourney’s <a href="https://www.midjourney.com/home/?callbackUrl=%2Fapp%2F">V5</a>. They handle everything from drafting content to generating hyper realistic images to writing code. These (<a href="https://dl.acm.org/doi/abs/10.1145/3442188.3445922">biased</a>) models are dramatically changing the way people work and create, almost overnight. What does this change about the way we work, make decisions, and process information? And who should get a say in these big decisions? 
We’ve also been informed of <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2023/03/29/twitter-announces-new-api-with-only-free-basic-and-enterprise-levels/">upcoming changes</a> to the Twitter API &#8211; a platform that currently gives academics access to 10 million tweets a month, for free. Researchers have used these data for years now, helping us better understand <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-018-07761-2#Sec8">misinformation</a>, <a href="https://ojs.aaai.org/index.php/ICWSM/article/view/14126">polarization</a>, <a href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2108.05921">hate speech</a>, <a href="https://publichealth.jmir.org/2020/2/e19273">public health</a>, and in my own work, <a href="https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=4334243">voter suppression</a>. When does a ‘public sphere’ deserve to be treated as ‘public data?’ What standards of openness and interoperability should we demand of the platforms we engage with?
There was, of course, the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/12/climate/silicon-valley-bank-climate.html">collapse </a>of Silicon Valley Bank, and the immediate calls for a bailout followed by a less-severe but effective Federal response. What does it mean for a tech-focused bank to be too big to fail? If the government is responsible for protecting the innovation sector, what responsibilities do we in turn have to the public?
And we had the <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2023/3/24/23654831/tiktok-congressional-hearing-xenophobia-china">TikTok hearing </a>in the House &#8211; a rare almost bipartisan event driven by our now-regular controversies of free speech, xenophobia, national security, and ‘worries about the young people.’ Senior lawmakers treated us to probing queries <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@nowthispolitics/video/7213856534080605483">like</a>, “Does TikTok access the home wifi network?” The hearing reminded us that our challenge isn’t just to make good rules, but that rulemakers themselves are far behind the innovation curb. What does protected speech look like in a world of algorithmic nudging? Who do we trust with our data? Who is qualified and informed enough to set good guardrails? 
Fundamentally, these are old questions in a new form, investigating our theories of decision making, public interest, fairness, and security. And the truth is &#8211; just as we don’t have a universal theory of values, we don’t have the answers to these questions either. What’s important is that we ask them, and use them to challenge our work, our priorities, and sense of civic duty. Incite Post | April 2nd, 2023:  An Action Packed Few Weeks

We know that the scale of our climate challenge is going to require innovation of all kinds. New technologies are important, but they&#8217;re just one part of the story. Lately, we’ve been thinking a lot about what climate-forward innovation in policy and public leadership might look like, and how we can support more of it. While historic progress has been made at <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-022-03807-0">COP conferences</a>, through <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/cleanenergy/inflation-reduction-act-guidebook/">federal legislation</a>, and in <a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/science/2020/06/23/two-thirds-of-americans-think-government-should-do-more-on-climate/">public opinion</a> we’re focusing this edition of the Incite Post on another key area where climate progress is needed: local politics.
Our friends at <a href="https://www.climatecabinetaction.org/">Climate Cabinet</a> have been working on this issue for quite some time now. Their organization helps local leaders run, win, and legislate on the climate crisis. They also started <a href="https://climatecabineteducation.org/">Climate Cabinet Education</a> to track local climate policy and offer guidance to policymakers. What we’ve learned from them is simple: local and down-ballot elections, including ‘off-cycle’ years, are immensely important for making progress on climate change.
Last year, <a href="https://linahidalgo.com/">Lina Hidalgo</a> won re-election as County Judge of Harris County, Texas in a very close race. As the chief executive of the third-most populous county in the United States, Lina is developing a climate action plan, electrifying Harris County, and demonstrating how local executive governments can invest in making their services and infrastructure climate friendly.
In Louisiana, <a href="https://grist.org/article/in-louisiana-an-electoral-upset-could-mean-a-breakthrough-for-renewables/">Davante Lewis</a> unseated an 18-year incumbent for a seat on the state’s Public Service Commission. His election on a climate-first platform shifts the balance of power on one of the most important energy regulatory bodies in the country towards holding fossil fuel companies to account – an example of how down ballot elections for regulators can accelerate our transition to green energy.
These are just two examples of the role local leadership can play in shaping our climate future. They also highlight the importance of constantly evaluating our avenues of impact and ensuring the &#8220;last mile&#8221; of community-level support is a priority alongside big ideas and new technologies.
We’ll be spending the next few months thinking about how we can be most effective in helping progressive voices and civil society organizations lead our local and state governments through the climate crisis. What do you see as our toughest political challenges for fighting climate change? Are you optimistic? 
At Climate Cabinet, we know that there is no silver bullet to solve climate change. This crisis must be solved with action at every level of government. In America, this means 500,000 state and local elected officials &#8211; who are collectively responsible for 75% of the country’s emissions goals under the Paris Agreement.
Through the Inflation Reduction Act, the federal government passed its largest ever commitment to tackling climate change – but actually implementing this law is up to state and local governments. Ensuring rural towns and big cities alike reap the benefits of this monumental opportunity requires pro-climate leadership at state and local offices nationwide. Down-ballot climate champions need better support, on the campaign trail and in office. With the right folks in office, I’m optimistic we can get this done.
What’s one of the most impactful victories you’ve seen in a down ballot election?
In Minnesota, Climate Cabinet supported Nicole Mitchell &#8211; a former meteorologist &#8211; in her state senate race for District 47. Incite Post | Climate Innovation Beyond Technology

2023 is going to be a big year for climate.
Last year’s $500 billion <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Inflation-Reduction-Act-Guidebook.pdf">Inflation Reduction Act</a> and 2021’s $1.2 trillion <a href="https://www.wri.org/insights/implementing-clean-energy-investments-us-bipartisan-infrastructure-law">Bipartisan Infrastructure Law</a> have opened up billions of dollars of potential funding for companies looking to make a difference on climate change.
At Incite, we work with dozens of companies doing just that – collaborating with public sector partners from the beginning. This includes my latest venture, <a href="https://www.mill.com/">Mill</a>, an end-to-end system to prevent food waste (you can read more about Mill in the previous edition of the <a href="https://www.incite.org/post/introducing-mill">Incite Post</a>).
So, last October, I hosted a webinar with <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/hannah-bascom-7044351/">Hannah Bascom</a> (VP, <a href="https://www.span.io/">SPAN</a>), <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/kategordonconsulting/">Kate Gordon</a> (Senior Advisor, <a href="https://www.energy.gov/">DOE</a>), and <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/brandon-hurlbut/">Brandon Hurlbut</a> (Co-Founder, <a href="https://www.boundarystone.com/">Boundary Stone Partners</a>) to discuss how startups can work with government, and with each other, to multiply their impact. Here are three points that really stuck out to me:
1. Start Early.
Brandon discussed working with a founder in rocket manufacturing – back when the startup only had two employees – and how a creative partnership helped them secure a lease agreement with a NASA testing facility. If they hadn’t started early, their business might not have been possible. Starting early helps you get a landscape of potential partnerships, build bonds beyond asking for things, and advise stakeholders at the beginning of the policymaking process.
2. Find all of the stakeholders. 
Kate advised companies to “get to know the different environments… there is a lot of money at the federal level that is driving a lot of state innovation and action.” Aside from federal funding, think about other valuable government relationships with decision makers like environmental regulators, state economic development offices, and metropolitan planning boards.
3. Work Collectively. 
Hannah tells us that “interfacing with industry groups and conferences are where you’ll get the sense of where to start.” Working with other people, whether non-profits, climate firms like Boundary Stone, industry groups, and even informal coalitions with competitors will help give you the credibility and expertise required to strengthen your government partnerships.
As my team and I build <a href="https://www.mill.com/">Mill</a>, and take on the work of changing everyday behaviors and larger waste systems, this advice from Brandon, Kate, and Hannah has been invaluable. Here&#8217;s what I&#8217;ll add: if we&#8217;re going to make true progress on climate change, we have to engage private companies, governments, and non-profits to work collectively. Historic climate investments from the federal government, a wealth of knowledge within climate non-profits, and the necessity for innovative climate solutions make this the perfect time to get started.

Some of the most exciting work in climate is happening at organizations like <a href="https://carbon180.org/">Carbon180</a>, where the team is working at the intersection of entrepreneurship, policy, academia, and peer nonprofits to scale carbon removal. At Incite, we know that solving the world&#8217;s toughest problems is an interdisciplinary task, so we reached out to <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/anupama-khan/">Anu Khan</a>, the Deputy Director of Science and Innovation at <a href="https://carbon180.org/">Carbon180</a>, to hear more about how she bridges gaps in her work.

What have you learned about communicating science and policy to stakeholders in often disconnected fields, like policy, academia, and industry? What advice would you give to people who want to help bridge some of the gaps?  
This is an area where I’m still growing and learning a lot, but two things come to mind right away.First, humility. I think effective communication really requires us to let go of “expert status” and engage others with genuine curiosity. What are they excited to share? What is their perspective? What is their experience?Second, context. What can I share that supports this person’s goals? I’m aiming for the “minimum viable complexity” around a topic – the smallest set of information needed to make a context-specific, informed decision – even if there are a dozen other things I think are cool and interesting. And the MVC is different for every audience.
Carbon180 sits at the intersection of so many key groups in the climate space; how does that frame your big-picture view of the communities building climate change solutions? Are there any missing pieces?  
For me, the big picture is all about trust and scale. We need carbon removal at scale to limit and (maybe) redress harms caused by climate change. But we cannot achieve scale without simultaneously building trust. Without trust, communities won’t agree to host CDR projects and taxpayers won’t agree to fund them. Without trust, the whole thing goes bust.We’re still in the early days of building this relationship between trust and scale, and there is a lot of work to do. Monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) is a great example. How do we show communities that this work is actually happening? How do we effectively communicate project performance and outcomes in ways that are context-specific and decision-relevant for a broad range of stakeholders? This is going to be a big part of my work going forward.
What’s your favorite piece of fiction &#8211; in any medium &#8211; that you’ve engaged with recently? Why? 
I recently finished <a href="https://bookshop.org/p/books/the-dispossessed-ursula-k-le-guin/7899183?ean=9780060512750">The Dispossessed</a> by Ursula Le Guin and I’m currently reading <a href="https://bookshop.org/p/books/walkaway-cory-doctorow/7103971?ean=9780765392770">Walkaway</a> by Cory Doctorow. These books explore different visions for a post-capitalist society. One vision is rooted in physical resource scarcity – a colony established on a barren moon – and the other is (sort of) free from resource scarcity through technology like advanced recycling and on-demand additive manufacturing.Together, they make for an interesting thought experiment: do we expect a future of unavoidable scarcity or engineered abundance or something in between? I think this difference in expectations underpins a lot of debates about climate action.

Three years ago, I became obsessed with food waste and how much we throw away.
It’s staggering. Turns out food takes up more space in US landfills than anything else (24%) and households are the #1 contributor (51% is from our kitchens, not farms, restaurants, or grocery stores).  Throughout the pandemic, I couldn’t stop thinking about our trash at home. When I left Nest, I didn’t plan to start another company. But the scale of the climate challenge we face is just too big. So I’m back to building, and I want to share more with you about why.

Most people don’t realize just how bad it is to throw a banana peel in the trash. Food in landfills wastes nutrients and is terrible for the environment as it emits methane, a greenhouse gas that’s 80x more potent than CO2 emissions and traps more heat.

When Matt and I first decided to start Incite, we knew our aim was to find up-and-coming entrepreneurs with a vision to help others, and to help them unlock their potential – with funding, advice, and support.
But then the question quickly became – how do we decide which projects to pick?
We learned the key has less to do with which project a leader chooses. It most often has to do with something fundamental to the leaders we support, and to us – our shared values.
Over the years, our work has been most successful when it’s anchored in our values and when we support entrepreneurs who share and lead with those values as they build their ventures.
Some of the most successful founders and builders we’ve worked with use three values-driven leadership strategies to help them stay focused on the long game.
1) They state their values, clearly and simply.
This step may seem obvious – but it’s often overlooked! You may know what your and your organization’s values are. But are they clear and accessible? Do they define not just what you do, but how you do it?
During my time on Pete Buttigieg’s campaign for President, we laid out the values of our campaign from the beginning – which Pete named our “<a href="https://www.wintheera.com/about/rotr/">Rules of the Road</a>”. By explaining our values in clear language, thousands of organizers, staff, and volunteers were able to operate with a shared framework while taking initiative to get things done with speed and at scale. And because we made them available publicly, anyone could learn what we stood for and join the cause.
2) They build a team of people who share their core values.
In early stage companies and organizations, job descriptions are constantly evolving. That’s why it’s important to recruit people to your team who have a deep commitment to your mission, and who understand that how you work is as important as what you’re working on.
A great interview process not only evaluates a candidate’s experience and technical abilities – it gets to their values alignment. We’ve seen too many cases where an early stage company or nonprofit brings in a “talented leader” who just doesn’t play nice in the sandbox. They’re able to get things done quickly, but they destroy team morale, culture, and trust in the process. If you’re in this for the long haul, hold the line on hiring for your values in addition to technical abilities.
3) Pick investors who align with your values.
Picking partners whose values align with your team’s is just as important for who you have on your cap table – and on your Board.
The current macroeconomic uncertainty has many of you contemplating how best to steer your teams and ventures in these uncharted waters. If you’ve done the hard work of looking for investors who are in it with you for the long term, and who understand the principles guiding your project, you’re more likely to find you’ve got partners that are rowing alongside your team.
For many climate-focused organizations we work with, this has meant taking the time to cultivate relationships with first-time venture investors, such as family offices. These new investors have a deep personal commitment to the goals of mitigating climate change, and are more likely to offer the patient capital that times like these may require.
Building something new from the ground up is tough work. We respect what you do to defy those challenging odds each day, and that’s a value we share.

Values-Driven Leadership Strategies

Matt here. Last year, I <a href="https://www.incite.org/post/values-focus-fresh-ideas-advice-for-founders-from-matt-rogers">wrote</a> to you to share my perspective on values, focus, and fresh ideas for founders.
Since then, the public markets have been a bit of a rollercoaster. And the venture capital landscape has quickly followed suit. I’m sure many of you are living it – the high highs just a few months ago, followed by this latest crash. It’s enough to cause any entrepreneur whiplash.
This could be a temporary blip. Or, it could represent the start of a more prolonged correction. Those of us who are actively building a startup need to plan now for what this change could look like.
While I continue to build my next venture (more soon!), here are a few ways I’m thinking about my own plans for the road ahead.
1. Define your goals for the next two years. 
Hone in on these clearly marked goal posts for the next 18 &#8211; 24 months, and have a plan for how to spend smartly to get there. Growth at all costs is not a smart strategy, and you should plan to meter your team, technology, and capital investments with an eye toward cash burn. In a period of market turmoil, it will become easier to become distracted, and more difficult to stay focused on your key objectives. Keep your eye on the ball.
2. Build your backup plan now (before you need one). 
In the event you need to pivot to reduce your burn rate, have a backup plan ready to execute if necessary to conserve cash and extend your runway. And have a backup plan for your backup plan. Identify potential hurdles or points of failure, and make a plan to get ahead of them. The best and most effective backup plans are well established before they’re necessary – making them easy to implement when the waters suddenly become choppy. Plan ahead.
3. Pick investors strategically. 
Bring people on to your cap table who have your back. Find investors who want to support you for the long haul, and who have the capability to do follow-on financings. Lean on these committed investors (and partners) where you can for support and to outsource capacity. If you wind up in a situation where you need to consider a bridge financing round, you want an investor on your cap table who you can quickly turn to. Alternatively, if you pick your investors because they like your spreadsheets, they might not be as eager when the going gets rough. Not all dollars are created equal.
4. Create value rather than valuations. 
The fundraising environment is changing rapidly, and as a result, your future fundraising rounds might look and feel a bit different than previous ones. Valuations will likely start to cool. And it’s no longer safe to assume your next fundraising round will happen when you expected it to. We suggest you raise capital when it’s available, and that you keep an open mind about accepting a flat or down-round, and focus on building real value (rather than chasing a paper valuation). It’s about surviving.
In my last <a href="https://www.incite.org/post/values-focus-fresh-ideas-advice-for-founders-from-matt-rogers">note</a> to you, I wrote about why it’s important for startup founders to be resilient in the face of challenges, and to build relationships for the long term. This is even more critical today. In an era of uncertainty, leaders who are dogged and startups that are nimble will emerge stronger, while those that aren’t will fall behind.
For the most effective entrepreneurs, perhaps the moment is even an opportunity in disguise.
